Option 1

Hello everyone and welcome back to Potions class! I could not be any happier to see that you decided to take the fourth-year class, but I'm also a little sad that this will be your last year with me. So let us enjoy it while it lasts! Now today we will be learning about the Wit-Sharpening Potion. This potion, when drunk, will enable you to think more clearly and because of this, the potion can be used as an antidote to the Confundus Charm. Just like the well-known Potions Master, Professor Snape, I encourage the idea of students drinking this potion before my class or any of their other classes! Anyhow, this potion is also characterized by its purple color. The known ingredients for this potion are ground scarab beetles, cut ginger roots, armadillo bile, and newt spleens. Just like in your previous years, you will be required to brew this potion. So with this in mind, let us get to brewing! As in your previous year classes, I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. Please brew the Wit-Sharpening Potion using your own words.

  2. What is an alternative way of brewing this potion?

Option 2

Hello everyone and welcome back to Potions class! Today we will be learning about the Calming Draught. It is a potion that can help you calm down if you have suffered from trauma, shock, or an emotional outburst. This potion has been used twice in recorded history. In 1996, Madam Pomfrey, a past matron at Hogwarts, gave this potion to Hannah Abbott, a fifth year who had an outburst during Herbology about exams. Another instance was after a muggle monster hunter, Laura Thorn, was obliviated to forget a troll she had seen. Her memories resurfaced after smelling dirty socks and a St. Mungo's healer gave her the draught. As you noticed, the brewing instructions are unknown to us at this time, but we do know some ingredients that it contains. These ingredients are lavender, crocodile heart, and peppermint. Now, since the directions on how to brew this potion are not currently known, you will be expected to attempt brewing this potion for your homework. You may add any extra ingredients you think the potion may need and prepare them how you like. However, keep in mind that the potion is characterized by its blue color. Now onto the assignment! As a reminder, I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. Will you add any ingredients? If so, what, how will they be prepared, and why did you choose them? If not, how will you prepare the currently existing ones?

  2. Please brew this potion and leave a phial on my desk.

Option 3

Hello everyone and welcome back to Potions class! Today we'll be learning about the Pepperup Potion, or alternatively, the Pepper-Up Potion. This potion is a cure for the common cold and it will even warm you up! The only side effect of this potion is that you will have steam coming out of your ears for potentially hours! In the 12th century, Linfred of Stinchcombe created a treatment for the common cold, which became the basis for the Pepperup Potion. Then around the 18th to 19th century, Glover Hipworth built up the previous work and perfected it until this resulted in the Pepperup Potion. This potion has been used several times throughout recorded history. In 1987-1988, Professor Snape, a past Potions Master, taught this to his class when he was suffering from a cold. Then during 1992-1993, the common cold spread around Hogwarts, and Madam Pomfrey, a past matron of Hogwarts, used this potion to relieve symptoms. Finally, in 1995, it was used after the second Triwizard Tournament task, on those who emerged from the Great Lake. Now, the directions for this potion may be unknown, but we do know of two ingredients it contains. These ingredients are the bicorn horn and mandrake root. Since all potions need to be completed with a spell, it is possible that the counter-curse for Curse of the Bogies is the spell used to complete this potion. Now that we have covered all that we know, let us move on to the assignment! I think you get the idea by now that I expect at least 200-300 words ;)

Homework

  1. Would you add any extra ingredients? If so, what, how would you prepare them, and why? If not, how would you prepare the known ingredients?

  2. Please try brewing this potion for me and then leave a phial on my desk.
