Option 1

Hello everyone and welcome to the Potions class! Today we are going to be learning about safety and the equipment that is utilized in Potions. Starting off with safety, it is of the utmost importance to keep your equipment clean! Otherwise, potion-brewing could potentially turn out to be quite disastrous! Those of you with long hair must have their hair tied up prior to entering the classroom and must keep it that way until after you have been dismissed. It is rather difficult to brew potions with your hair constantly in the way and you do not want to risk accidentally adding it in as an ingredient! When brewing potions, you also need to be able to work easily and that includes keeping clothing out of the way! So be sure to remove your robes and keep your sleeves rolled up! This classroom has a closet, so you are more than welcome to hang your robes in there. If you keep all of this in mind, then brewing potions will be much easier. Now onto the equipment, without it, how would brewing potions be possible? First, we have this book, Magical Drafts and Potions, which informs you of how to brew many different potions along with the ingredients needed for them. Second, we have several different cauldrons, but the one that you will be using is a Size 2 Pewter. Third, you have brass scales, which are for measuring your ingredients. Fourth, we have phials, which we typically will use for holding potions. Fifth, we have brass scales, which is for weighing potion ingredients. Sixth, we have brew-proof goggles, which protect your eyes while we're brewing. After that, we have a mortar and pestle, which is used for grinding up ingredients. Then there is this potion ingredient kit, containing basic ingredients that you will need to brew beginner potions. Finally, you have your wands, which are needed to complete potions. Of course, there is also the typical parchment and quills that are needed for taking notes or doing homework, just like all of your other classes. Now that we have covered everything for today, we shall move onto your homework. I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. Why would it be dangerous to have dirty equipment and clothing in the way?

  2. Who wrote Magical Drafts and Potions and what seven known recipes are in Magical Drafts and Potions?

  3. Name the different kinds of cauldrons and phials.

  4. What is the difference between brass scales and silver scales?

Option 2

Hello everyone and welcome to the Potions class! Today we are going to be discussing the twelve different uses of dragon's blood. Dragon's blood, as obvious as it sounds, is the blood of any of the many breeds of dragons. It has magical properties and it is very expensive to buy it bottled. It is thanks to a former, yet famous, Headmaster of Hogwarts, Albus Dumbledore, to have discovered the different uses. However, Ivor Dillonsby claimed that he had discovered eight of the uses before Dumbledore and that Dumbledore had stolen his notes. Despite all of this, only three out of twelve are currently known to us. The first one is used to clean ovens, the second is used for removing spots, and the last is used to cure verruca, which is a contagious and painful wart on the bottom of your foot. Dragon's blood also seems to have a distinct taste as well since Dumbledore could distinguish it from human blood. It is also possible that a dragon's blood can come in different colors depending on the breed of dragon since we know that both green and scarlet have been recorded. Now I know that today's lesson is a little short, purely due to a lack of information. However, that is where you will come in with today's homework! I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. How did the Potions Master, Horace Slughorn, use dragon's blood?

  2. How about the groundskeeper, Rubeus Hagrid?

  3. Let's speculate, what do you think the other nine uses are?

Option 3

Hello everyone and welcome to the Potions class! Today we are going to learn about the Cure for Boils and then you will get to brew it as your very first potion! So open your book, Magical Drafts and Potions, and try to locate it. Now the Cure for Boils, also known as the Boil Cure, removes boils and can be used as a remedy if you happen to be hit with the Pimple Jinx. Its known ingredients are dried nettles, six snake fangs, four horned slugs, and two porcupine quills. Of course, there are other alternative ways to brew this potion, which come along with different ingredients, but you will tell me about this later in your homework assignment. Now please pay attention as I demonstrate how to brew this according to Magical Drafts and Potions. First, you add six snake fangs to the mortar and crush them into a fine powder. Next, you will add four measures of this to your cauldron and heat it at 250 degrees for ten seconds. You will then wave your wand and let it brew for almost forty-five minutes. Moving onto part two, you will add four horned slugs to your cauldron and then take your cauldron off the fire. After that, add two porcupine quills to your cauldron and stir clockwise five times before finally waving your wand to finish the potion. Now, you will notice pink smoke coming from the cauldron, which indicates that I brewed it correctly. Please keep in mind that you must take the cauldron off the fire before adding the porcupine quills. If you do not, your cauldron will melt and the smell will be awful! If any of the horrid-smelling potion spills, your skin will end up with boils, so please be careful! With warnings out of the way, I am sure that you are excited to brew so let us move onto your homework! I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. Tell me the other two alternative brewing instructions besides Magical Drafts and Potions and Book of Potions.

  2. Please brew the Cure for Boils according to the Book of Potions, using your own words.
