Option 1

Hello everyone and welcome back to Potions class! It is so wonderful to see that you decided to register for this class again. Now today we will be talking about the two most commonly used ingredients in potions, flobberworm mucus, and standard ingredient. Flobberworm mucus is also spelled as flobberworm mucous and called flobber mucus for short. As the name suggests, it comes from the flobberworm, which is a 25.4 cm magical worm that has no teeth, eats strictly plants, and falls into the Ministry of Magic Classification of X, making it a very boring creature. If you take Care of Magical Creatures, you can learn more about this creature. Now, this ingredient is slimy and green in color. In order to prepare it, you must juice a flobberworm and then shake the bottle. You can buy eight bottles for only one Galleon. I would tell you about their use in potions and what potions they are in, but I would like you to do so later in your homework. Now onto standard ingredient, which is an herb or a mixture of dried herbs. It has several magical properties and applications. It is typically crushed into a powder, but it can also be used as it is. It is used in several different potions, but I would like you to tell me about them so now onto the homework assignment! I expect at least 200-300 words in total.

Homework

  1. What four potions is flobberworm mucus used in?

  2. Why do you think flobberworm is used as a potion ingredient?

  3. What five potions is standard ingredient used in?

  4. Speculate, what kind of herb or herbs do you think is in standard ingredient?

Option 2

Hello everyone and welcome back to Potions class! Today we are going to be learning about the Fire Protection Potion, or also known as the Ice Potion. You can use this potion to be able to move through flames without being harmed. But when you drink this potion, be prepared to feel extremely cold! This makes sense as to why it is seen in a phial that looks like an iceberg. This potion was known to be brewed by a former Potions Master Severus Snape as part of his protection of the Philosopher's Stone. It was also taken by former Defense Against the Dark Arts Professor Quirinus Quirrell, the famous Harry Potter, and quite possibly former Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, so they could get past the black flames guarding a room deep in the Underground Chambers, which contained the Philosopher's Stone along with the Mirror of Erised. You will get the opportunity to brew this potion and even try it out, but you must first know some things about it. The ingredients that you will be using are bursting mushrooms, salamander blood, and wartcap powder. This is something not listed in your books, but in order to complete your potions, you will be using the Flame-Freezing Charm. So without further ado, let us move onto your homework! And of course, I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. Please brew the potion using your own words.

  2. After brewing the potion, I would like you to take a sample of it and tell me about your experience.

Option 3

Hello everyone and welcome back to Potions class! Today we are going to be learning about the Strengthening Solution. This potion, when used, will give the drinker a tremendous amount of strength. This is why this potion is typically seen in a phial that looks like it has a fist. When brewing this potion, it takes at least two stages and needs several days in between the two stages to mature. The only known ingredients for this potion is powdered Griffin claw and salamander blood. Now as you may have noticed, there are no brewing instructions since they are not known to us at this time. You may think that this means that you will not get to brew it, and I am sure that this can be disheartening, but do not fret! Taking the knowledge that we already know and the creativity that I know you all have within you, brewing is possible! So without further ado, let us start the homework! Please remember that I expect at least 200-300 words.

Homework

  1. Would you add any more ingredients to this potion? If so, what and why did you choose those? If not, why?

  2. How would you brew this potion? Please include whether you added any extra ingredients besides what is already known to us.
