NEWT LEVEL

So you have a year of Muggle Studies and have learned quite a bit about how they operate from day to day. Now that you have experienced some of the muggle world, it is time to advance to a further understanding of muggles. We will be looking more at some interaction between muggles and magical people and how the relationship between the two worlds can work. There will be 3 tasks to complete for this year, no exam. The only stipulation, is that you need to hand in all work by the end of week 8, please note I would like Task one handed in by end of week 4. Like OWL, A minimum of 400-500 words should be written for each task. You are not limited, but please do not feel you have to write novels for your responses. I do expect what you write to be detailed oriented and include everything you can tell me about that lesson.   I look more for what is included in the work, than how much you write just to write to get to the word count. There are 3 options for the first 4 weeks, but only 2 for the second 4 weeks. If you have any questions, just ask in the classroom, or drop me a PM. :)  Please read the book, Muggles Who Notice.

Term 1 Weeks 1-4

Option 1

Please be sure to read Chapter 1 for this lesson

Despite efforts to not allow muggles to see what our world is like, magical people have fallen in love with muggles. All kinds of problems can arise as a result of a muggle and magical person getting married. Anything from where to live, who to tell, use of magic and raising of children.

Homework:

Your assignment for this task is to describe what happened when you fell in love with a muggle. Include but do not be limited to how do you tell them that you that you can do magic. How did it go? what did you decide on where to live, in a magical or muggle world. What about children. What are the problems you can might encounter regarding your decisions? Give me as much information as you can about making a choice to live with or with out a muggle.

Option 2

Following on the above, we know that many children of muggles have been found to be a witch or wizard. As we know, they are put down to attend a wizarding school when they turn 11. Since their parents have no idea why their child seems to have a way of making things happen. Your task is to be an associate of a magical school who needs to approach the parents and convince them that their child is magical and what they can expect in the future. You need to convince them that this is acceptable behaviour in the magical world and see what you can do to allow them to let their child become a part of the magical world.

Homework:

Describe what you need to do before approaching the muggle parents, dress, arrival plan of action. What you will talk with them about to help them understand their child and what magic can do for their child, so that they will allow their child to attend a magical school.

Option 3

You are an Auror just wrapping up for the night after a long day of making sure no muggles are aware of magical events.  You are looking forward to a night at home with a good book and a fine meal.   Suddenly there is a great uproar in the office and all members of the Department  are told they can not go home.  Word has just arrived of a great tragedy. It is a sad night for the magical world.  The Potters have been killed and their infant son Harry has been left alone.   You are all dispatched at once to Godric's Hollow to find out what has happened and make sure the muggles are taken care of.

Homework:

Write up your report of what you saw on your arrival, discussions you have with the local policeman on the scene along with any eyewitness reports from the muggles.  Obviously. the muggles can not be left with these memories so tell what was done to make sure they are not aware of the magic that has gone on and what they actually think has happened. Details, details about what you saw, what had to be done, the effort that was needed to protect the muggles.

Term 2 Weeks 1-4

Option 1

As we know, there have been many unexplained occurrences in the muggle world. Now we know what actually caused them, lets just say some magical folks were not to careful and events have had to be covered up by those folks in the MLE office and by Obliviators. Some examples were given to you in chapter 3. Part of what goes along with the events that magical people have caused is discussed in chapter 4.

Homework:

I would like for you to write about 3 occurrences that have happened in the muggle world that were really a result of magic gone bad or kids playing around thinking no one would see.

Tell me what the even was. How did it happen. What was the muggles reaction to the events. Who came into the situation to manage things and what exactly did they do so muggles see the event differently from what actually occurred.

Option 2

Muggles hold a variety of jobs and how they work day to day can be so different from the magical world.  After-all, they do not have a wand that they can wave and make life easier.  For this task, you are going to be living in a muggle environment from start to finish working at a job that many muggles have done and living in a place as a muggle would, with all the trappings they deal with daily.  Electricity, appliances, TV's computers, etc.

Homework:

You have 4 weeks to do this option. You will be handing in your wand and heading out to spend 4 weeks living with muggles. You have a love of art and decide to visit a small village and set up to teach art to the residents there. You have a good supply of muggle money that should take care of food, rent and purchasing of any supplies needed to teach above the paints, brushes and canvases I have given you. As part of this option, you need to keep a diary of what all you did. You will need to find a place to live, transportation to the village and around town if need be. Shopping will be important also! Once in town, look around for a location where you can teach the class. Do you need a building. Or can you set up in a park? Check in with the person who oversees the village and request permission to run a class for a few weeks and ask if you can set up in the location you found. Once you have taken care of that, you can go about posting notices about your class.

As part of this diary, you need to tell me what issues you have run into being a witch/wizard with no wand. Thiongs like electricity, muggle ways of cooking, cleaning, etc. At the end of your 4 weeks, you will return to the castle and hand in your diary in exchange for your wand. :) Have fun!
